Trying to understand repentance!
Some thoughts on repentance. All verses come from the KJV Bible. Repentance is about trusting God to be who he is and to do what he does. It is not about doing good deeds or doing bad deeds. That particular conflict is present always in the flesh, that war so to speak (Romans 7:15). I have thanked God for showing me that conflict. To ignore it leads to spiritual death. Chances are I will do wrong again, if not in actual deed, at least in thought, desire and emotion, I'm only human. Yes, I am sorry, maybe even extremely sorry sometimes, and I truly don’t want to be the kind of person I used to be. I truly want to move in the right direction. Harry A. Ironside, "Repentance is the very opposite of meritorious experience. It is the confession that one is utterly without merit, and if he is ever saved at all it can only be through the merits of our Lord Jesus Christ, 'who gave himself a ransom for all.' Here is firm footing for the soul who realizes that all self-effort is but sinking sand. Christ alone is the Rock of our salvation. Repentance is NOT a desire to stop sinning. Repentance is realizing that you are a SINNER and need the Savior, and so you believe the Gospel and are saved. Repentance is changing your mind about whatever was previously hindering you from completely resting in Christ for salvation.” I'll try to put it in my words. *I finally came to my senses and realized the burden of sin I carried around. I finally realized I needed Him and His offer of help; I truly felt a need to seek Him. I can't explain it, I knew exactly who to ask for forgiveness of those sins. I knew that a mere man couldn't help me, only God. Did God make it known to me what I needed to do? I believe He did. I can't think of another explanation. I also know that He has forgiven me. I could feel it the moment I asked for forgiveness. It was like this heavy weight was lifted off of me, the weight of a car for instance. I know that I still have weaknesses, tendencies, etc., to do wrong. I know that I do not like those tendencies. I still have them anyway. I believe God has placed those tendencies and memories within me to help me continually see my need for Him. I have often wondered where I would be without those feelings of needing Him? Some reasons why we all need Him, continually! Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away. Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. Final thoughts: Nothing (works, deeds, etc.) a human does can lead to salvation. Only true belief in God, Jesus' sacrifice and accepting His offer can lead to eternal life. How one gets to that point is not what really matters, it is getting there and making the right choice that does matter. If we can help someone come to that point, Great! John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. [Jesus did the work. We believe and receive. God does the rest]. Psalm145:18 The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. [Repentance must be done in truth. You can’t con God]. Please study your bibles cover to cover.
