In recent years, traffic accidents have occurred frequently in the United States, especially the number of fatal traffic accidents has shown a rising trend. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of traffic deaths in the United States in 2023 has exceeded nearly 50,000, almost reaching the highest record in nearly 20 years. The increase in fatal traffic accidents has not only brought painful losses to countless families, but also made society pay renewed attention to traffic safety.
Across the United States, traffic accidents have claimed the lives of people from all walks of life and shattered families and communities. Among the recent tragedies, the case of 7-year-old girl Ivory Giselle Smith from Houston, Texas stands out. Unfortunately, Ivory was killed by a suspected drunk driver who ran a red light and collided head-on with her family's car. When this heartbreaking incident occurred, Ivory and her mother, Christina Quino, had just spent time with their family and were about to go home. Christina was seriously injured in the car accident, and she faced the challenge of learning to walk again during her recovery.
On the legal front, Joel Gonzalez Chacin, 41, who was suspected of driving under the influence, was arrested at the scene and charged with intoxication manslaughter. Reports indicate that he showed several signs of intoxication when police arrived. Ivory's family has become increasingly frustrated, especially with their views on whether the legal consequences of driving under the influence are adequate. Shonda Collins said emotionally, "The law needs to change... The penalties for driving under the influence are not severe enough, and that's why this keeps happening. We need to work to make sure other families don't have to go through this." Chacin has been released on bail, but his release has raised questions from community members and Ivory's family.
Meanwhile, states continue to report pedestrian deaths. The most recent example occurred on Interstate 40 near Amarillo, Texas, when 31-year-old Johnathan Morales was struck and killed by a recreational vehicle. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to this tragedy, as Morales was found on the highway for reasons that are still unclear.
These tragic incidents are frequent and raise serious questions about road safety and the consequences of drunk and reckless driving. Advocacy groups are calling for stricter laws, better enforcement of drunk driving laws, and increased public education campaigns to reduce traffic fatalities.
According to national statistics, nearly 38,000 people died on U.S. roads in 2023, reflecting the severity of the problem. Law enforcement agencies and local governments have been urged to invest more resources to prevent such deaths. Community members have stressed the need for accessible ride-sharing services to reduce drunk driving incidents.
The reason why the U.S. is at odds with other countries around the world is mainly due to the entrenched car-first culture. When designing the transportation system in the United States, the starting point is mainly to facilitate the rapid movement of cars rather than the safety of other people on the road. Over the past two or three decades, American cars have become larger and more deadly when they hit people. Data shows that compared with 1994, the number of American drivers and passengers killed in car accidents in 2020 decreased by 10% and 42%, respectively, while the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed soared by 19% and 17%.
Speeding and drugs are the main factors in traffic accidents. Especially on highways without enough warning signs or markings, it is easy for drivers to become lax and speed. Studies have shown that for every 10 mph increase in speed, there is an increased chance of an accident. Even during rush hour, many drivers still tend to ignore speed limit signs, leading to accidents. According to NHTSA data, drunk driving accidents account for nearly 30% of all traffic fatalities. Although states have increased penalties for drunk driving, this behavior is still widespread in the region.
The most tragic thing is that dangerous traffic is eroding the safety of the people, but the federal government is not doing anything.
